Gaz Coombes Live in Leeds

On Saturday night, I along with many other Supergrass fans saw the bands former front-man Gaz Coombes perform solo at the Brudnell Social Club in Leeds. The new material, from his first solo album Here Come the Bombs, features the indie rock flavours of his older work with a synth edge echoing the styles of Radiohead and Arcade Fire.

The small and intimate venue was the perfect setting and despite the fact that no one seemed to know the words to his new songs, the upbeat nature of his material kept everyone dancing throughout the almost two hour set. And despite the fact I believed that the Supergrass songs in the encore would be my highlight of the night, I was wrong, my personal highlight of the night was the performance of White Noise, which is my favourite song from his album and in my opinion the best one he has ever written.

Then, when Gaz finished and we all made our way over the plastic cup carpet to leave I had an overriding feeling of nostalgia. It was of my first time seeing Supergrass and of a time when music made you dance like no one is watching while the lyrics made you cry like a sailors wife looking at a storm, and for a while all of us in that room experienced that feeling again. Gaz Coombes’ simple performance style makes him in my opinion the best live act I have ever seen and his music is some of the best I have ever listened to. Gaz’s brilliant new album Here Come The Bombs is available to buy now and I also recommend that you download some Supergrass and fill your ears with the Britpop goodness of true 90’s music.
